I was watching a discussion program this morning & one of the subjects was ‘designer babies’. This is where the embryos are checked for any genetic defects or anything that could lead to cancer or other disease or affliction later in life.
Personally I think that if you can give your future child a better chance of a full life I’m all for it. Don’t confuse this with cloning which isn’t such a great idea for the human race. Any kind of growing humans for spare parts would be a bad thing. However doing your best to have a healthy child can only be a good thing.
There is of course talk of designer babies having their eye colour, nose or mouth etc chosen from a list to give you a ‘made to order’ baby. Although you can determin the sex of the baby already and screen the embryo for certain potential defects, I don’t think you should be allowed to design a baby to look a certain way. Let nature take it’s course for the most part, even if a little help is sometimes needed along the way.
For all of the ethical / moral arguments out there, are any of the people making the arguments prepaired to tell the child, when old enough to understand, why he has to live with some genetic disorder because they said the fix shouldn’t be allowed?
