For those outside the UK Coronation Street is a UK ‘soap’, a primetime TV soap opera. While filming a wedding scene in a UK church film makers wanted a cross removed from the scene incase it offended someone. On being told that the cross was fixed in position they then hid the cross behind flowers & a candelabra.
Another example of PC fear gone mad. For a start doesn’t the muslim faith recognise that Jesus was a real person? Lets be honest here. In the UK PC is used to ensure muslims are not offended for fear of reprisals. Muslim this… Muslim that… They are real people! The vast majority of the muslim faith are not offended by the sight of a cross in a church. Below is a quote from the Reverend James Milnes of St. Mary’s Church, Cheshire where the wedding scene was filmed.
“How can people think it is offensive to see a cross in a church in the same way you would normally see a Koran in a mosque or the Torah in a synagogue? This is the emblem of this faith.
This has resonance around the country. It plays into what we are as a nation because I do not think we have a clear idea as English people. We do not really know where we are going.
There is constant attrition to our way of life. You can’t say this or you can’t say that for fear of offending. Who can we possibly be offending?”
(End quote)
Regardless of it’s original meaning today political correctnes is associated with fear in most peoples minds. Fear of being charged with some offence or sued for some kind of discrimination. Time to bring back some common sense & reintroduce tolerance into our society. PC is slowly but steadily driving a wedge between certain ethnic communities that make up the population of the UK today. When will fear of offending finally be an offence in itself?
