While I still like to support charities with small donations when I can, my life and now my blog are following a change of direction. Over the past couple of years the cost of living combined with no rise in income has got me thinking more and more about self sufficiency. Two years ago I was so worried about my lack of income that I brought a 3 man tent in a sale and stored it under my bed so I would be able to put some kind of roof over my head If I couldn’t afford rent. Luckily it never came to that. It was how ever enough to set me on a course of keeping canned food under my bed in case I had no money to buy any.
Since then I’ve spent money on solar panels and little bits & pieces to try ideas in self sufficiency. Remember I live in a rented room in a flat share so space is tight & I don’t have any roof space for solar panels but have squeezed one big one in my large south facing window. I also have an inverter & 3 leisure batteries, this is the start of my experiments in solar energy. I can’t cover the over rooms in the flat but hope to take all the electrical goods in my room off grid to help keep down the utility bills.
As of now I’m building a shed / greenhouse on a corner of my allotment plot that I took on last December. Not growing anything yet but soon! Experiments on the allotment (budget allowing) will be a major ongoing posts listing ideas I have on how I’ll be using my valuable allotment space showing whats working and what doesn’t.
This is the start of sharing a journey into self sufficiency that began almost 2 years ago. I’m still just starting out on this journey so I’m sure there will be some ups and downs involved.
