Police should just ‘police’. That means catch criminals & be a deterrent to crime. Here in the UK there is a general feeling that the punishment is always to light for the crime, with convicted criminals not being given long enough jail terms. When they are in jail they get cushy lives with play stations etc.
When Kent Police decided to celebrate Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Trans-gender History month by organising a gay writing contest for kids they crossed into major non police territory. It is not the job of any police to raise awareness about diversity. That job goes to the council. Aiming it at 14 year old children isn’t a great idea either. It’s the job of trained teachers in our schools to stamp out racism at a young age. This should be getting easier with schools being more culturally diverse these days.
I’ve said it before & I’ll say it again, I’m not ‘gay bashing’ here. This is about a police force doing what they are paid to do with our tax money – stop crime. In addition to this writing contest Kent police are also hosting a seminar and a banquet on the gay theme. So Kent Police have been hailed as a gay friendly employer, woopey do!
Kent Police, like any police force, should only concentrate on employing the best people for the job based on qualifications etc & race or sexual orientation shouldn’t come into it. Just how much tax payers money have they wasted with this ‘stunt’.
If the police want to do something useful in schools how about telling the kids what will happen to them if they break the law. Of course they can’t do this can they! What deterrent is there as an example to kids if the police tell them ‘probably nothing’.
