The UK DNA database debate. I’ve been thinking about this for a while. Surprisingly it was watching a BBC program tonight (Saturday) called ‘Natural World’ for the first time that actually inspired me to blog about the UK DNA Database Debate. I know, weird! The program itself was about, essentially, eco friendly farming. I grew up wanting t be a game keeper. No way into that job so I became a farm hand on a YTS course (anyone from UK remember YTS courses?).
I stuck that out for 1 year, passed my city & Guilds exams in farming, then, much to my parents relief, got out of farming because there was no money in it unless you owned the farm. That was back in the 80’s. We as people need farmers to produce much of the things you buy at the grocery store. Think about it – farmers work hard & produce the food that you eat to stay alive! forget lawyers & celebrity etc pay packets. In an ever more complicated world just keep it simple! Most of the western worlds population would be dead if farmers from around the world stopped growing the food, both ‘meat & veg’ that you eat daily to keep yourselves alive. Forget high pay packets for politicians! Again keep it simple! Without farmers supplying your food maybe 80% of the worlds population would die of starvation. It kind of makes you think that, with that power over life of the human race, why are farmers not the highest paid people on the planet? There’s no denying the work very hard for a living!
I guess I / we just become numb / ignorant to the work involved to put the food, nicely packaged, on the shelf of your local food store. So back to that UK DNA database debate!
The UK DNA database debate. The UK people have been ‘dumbed down’ by the very government power that wants, hell NEEDS, to build a UK DNA database of criminals. So, when someones not convicted they want ‘off’ of the UK DNA database. Think about it – of course they do! Some may have got away with a crime in the eyes of the court. Doesn’t necessarily mean they were actually innocent. They just don’t want their DNA to be listed in case they do a ‘bad thing’ again.
Think about this. Personally I believe in the theory that if you’ve got nothing to hide then you’ve got nothing to fear. No lets add a social angle. In today’s world both parents of a child have to work hard to pay for family life. I guess I was lucky as a child. Only my dad worked. My mum worked just as hard as my dad but didn’t get a wage for it – /she was a professional housewife & mother of 4 sons. I’m the youngest. I just didn’t know how to deal with mum dying of bowel cancer in about 3 months flat when I was 17. Tomorrow (5th April) I become 41. I found my dad dead from a stroke when I was 22. Guess I lost the chance to talk to my parents about problems in my life at an early age.
Opps! I went off on a slight tangent to explain some thing about myself. Lets get back to the UK DNA database debate. I think the big breakdown in UK society that we are seeing is because today’s parents are just too exhausted to ‘police’ their own kids if they get out of control. Add to this the political correctness brigade who don’t want to to slap your kid on the backside if they get out of control. Just don’t get me started on PC…..
In an evermore complicated world I look at nature. Watch a nature program about, say, lion cubs. If they get to rowdy with one of their parents they’ll get a casual slap[ from the parents paw. I liken this to a slap on a babies nappied backside. Please note, this slap has a ‘shock’ value for the baby / kid with no long term ill effects. I don’t condone child abuse in any way, shape or form. The occasional slap on the backside when needed is not child abuse in my view. It’s an example of tough love.
Well, I guess I went off on a tangent again! Back to why I believe a UK DNA database, in theory, would be great for parents. When both parents have to work to provide for the family it becomes harder for parents to actually parent their kids. The Answer? The option of putting your as yet innocent kids DNA on a UK DNA database & as that kid grows up let the kid know about DNA & the fact his / her DNA is on the UK DNA database & they’ll get caught & pay the price for any serious crime.
What I’m getting at here is to empower the parents long term with the ability / help to provide a deterrent to their kids not to go off the rails into crime when they go up!. I fully appreciate this could be called social engineering. Lets face it, isn’t the law system & jail sentences a form of social engineering as well? The big problem is that there is a generation of people that know the risk is worth it as a lot of the time a jail sentence today is no real deterrent. A UK DNA database from an ‘opt in’ point of view for parents in addition to convicted criminals being listed for life is an option that has to be considered & debated more fully.
Of course, it doesn’t change the fact that the current UK labour government has a piss poor record for holding such UK database info securely. So what do you think about the use of a UK DNA database in relation to using it as a deterrent to bring up kids the right way?
