So UK knife crime is getting out of hand. We’ve known it for ages and we’ve known the solution for ages too. Make the punishment for even getting caught carrying a knife more servere. Count me in with the 60% that think if you get caught carrying a knife you should go straight to jail, I think for a month.
This could serve as a wake up call for the yob in question. The yob should be forced to watch lot’s of video’s of interviews of serious knife crime offenders while there. The yob will get to see that he’s going to lose out on having a life in general for a long time & get to understand what that’s like.
On ‘weapons’ in general I want to make one simple point. Knives & guns (& bombs) don’t kill people, people kill people! These weapons are just some tool’s people use to kill with. I had a penknife as as kid. Looking back, it was kind of a gesture from my dad when he presented me with my first penknife that he thought I was more grown up & responsible. The thought of using it for self defence never even entered my mind.
The nanny state created this problem & only getting real tough on people carrying knives will solve the problem now. The government needs to build more jail space. Make sure the yob can easily be found a space in jail to get their wake up call. Right now the yob’s attitude to being caught with a knife is that they will only get a slap on the wrist at worst. Only when the yob’s get to understand carrying a knife is a one way ticket to a jail cell for a month will they start to think twice about carrying a knife in the first place.
If they get caught carrying a knife a second time make sure that’s a guaranteed one way ticket to a jail cell for 3 months. Also make sure the full jail term is served in both cases, no get out of jail early allowed. The whole point of ‘the punishment must fit the crime’ in general is to deter people from letting themselves end up in jail in the first place. Make a jail term & uncomfortable experience, no TVs in cell’s. Try giving them a book instead. If they can’t read teach them how to.
